Product Review: Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La Defining Curl Custard
If you’ve ever stood in the natural hair aisle staring at way too many curl products, you’re not alone! Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La has built a reputation as a go-to styler in the natural hair community. But does it really live up to the hype? I put it to the test to see how it would work on my curls, from texture and hold to overall moisture. Here’s my review…
First Impressions
Texture and Consistency
The first thing I noticed was the texture, as it’s thick, creamy, and rich, almost like a ‘hybrid’ between a butter and a custard. It doesn’t feel sticky or greasy, but it definitely has weight to it. If you’re used to lighter gels or mousses, this will feel much more moisturizing.
Scent
It has a sweet, almost fruity smell to it, kind of like berries. It’s noticeable, especially right after applying, but it doesn’t linger all day (at least not strongly.) If you’re scent-sensitive, it’s worth noting, but personally, I liked it.
Packaging
Curl La La comes standard in a big 15 ounce tub, although there are a few smaller tub options, which makes it budget-friendly. In my opinion, you get a lot of product for the price. The packaging is simple and sturdy, and it’s easy to scoop product out with your fingers. The packaging and product itself is also purple, which is always a plus for me!
How I use it
On Wash Day
On wash day, I started by shampooing and conditioning my hair as usual. After I was done with this, I applied my preferred leave-in (talk for another post..) while my hair was still damp to lock in moisture. Then, I split my hair in two and applied the Curl La La to each side, raking it through with my fingers to make sure the product was evenly distributed. I also smoothed it in using the ‘praying hands’ method to help encourage definition. I then let my hair air-dry as usual.
For Styling
I used the custard for both a wash-and-go and a braid-out. For the braid-out, I applied it to damp hair before braiding, and then unbraided my hair once it was dry, which gave me soft, stretched curls with a nice hold. I also used it on misted hair for refreshing next-day curls by lightly spraying my hair with water and reapplying a small amount of product. It refreshed well, without leaving residue or buildup. Overall, I found that it worked best on damp, freshly-washed hair (although I do like how it refreshed my curls), and also worked well with a water-based leave-in.
What I loved
Moisture, moisture, and more moisture
- My curls felt super hydrated, even days after styling. This product really helps lock in moisture, which is especially great if your hair tends to dry out quickly.
Great curl definition
- I noticed nice clumping, bounce, and shape, especially when I applied it on my wet hair. It gave my curls more structure without stiffness.
Versatile Use
- It worked well for both braid-outs and wash-and-go styles. It also helped with next-day curl refreshes when paired with a bit of water.
Affordable and long-lasting
- For under $10, this tub will last a while, even with thick or high-density hair.
A Few Things to Consider
Heavy for finer textures or looser curls
If you have Type 2 or looser 3A curls, this might feel too heavy. It can weigh hair down if overused. In use, you might want to dilute with water or apply a smaller amount.
Scent might not be for everyone
While I personally liked it, the sweet scent is pretty noticeable when applying, and it might clash with strongly-scented leave-ins or oils.
Tips for Using Curl La La
- Apply it to wet hair for best curl definition and moisture absorption!
- Use ‘praying hands’ method or rake it through for even distribution.
- Pair it with a leave-in conditioner if your hair is high porosity, or use it alone if your hair is easily weighed down.
- Don’t overdo it, a little really goes a long way with this product. Start small and build up only if needed.
Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?
Yes, in my opinion Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La Defining Curl Custard is worth it, especially if your curls need moisture and soft definition! Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La is an affordable, effective curl cream/custard hybrid that delivers moisture and definition without a harsh hold. It seems to be perfect for Type 3B-4C hair, especially if you’re looking for a product that can work both for everyday styling and protective styles.
It’s not the best match for super fine or low-porosity hair unless you’re very light-handed, but for thick, dry, or high-porosity curls? This one’s a win!
